Is a furnace or AC tune-up worth it?

Answered by Yogi Heating & Cooling, Schaumburg, IL · Updated 2026-10-22

For most homes, yes. ENERGY STAR recommends a yearly tune-up because clean, properly adjusted equipment runs more efficiently and comfortably, and the visit catches worn parts before they fail on the coldest or hottest day. It also gives you dated service records, which matter if you ever need to make a warranty claim.

Why yearly maintenance pays off

ENERGY STAR's maintenance checklist gives several reasons a contractor tune-up matters:

  • Dirty coils make an AC run longer, which raises energy costs and shortens equipment life.
  • Too much or too little refrigerant makes a system less efficient.
  • Airflow problems can cut a system's efficiency by up to 15%.

On the heating side, ENERGY STAR warns that gas connections that aren't working right are a fire hazard and can contribute to health problems, and that a dirty burner or cracked heat exchanger makes a furnace run less safely. A fall check is the time to find those problems, before the furnace runs for months straight.

What manufacturer warranties say about maintenance

New equipment comes with a parts warranty, but it has conditions. Carrier's current limited warranty for air conditioners and heat pumps (edition dated August 2026) is a good example:

  • It covers parts that fail from defects "under normal use and maintenance."
  • Installation, use, care and maintenance must follow the installation instructions, owner's manual and Carrier's service information.
  • It doesn't cover failures from improper servicing, and it doesn't pay for labor or routine maintenance like filter changes.
  • The 10-year parts term requires registering at carrier.com within 90 days of installation. Otherwise it's 5 years, except in states that don't allow that condition.

Some warranties are stricter. Lennox's basic limited warranty for equipment installed before Feb. 8, 2022, says failure to maintain the equipment will void the warranty and that proof of prior maintenance may be required. Lennox also requires online registration within 60 days of installation for its extended warranties.

The takeaway: read your own warranty, register new equipment on time, and keep every dated service invoice in one folder.

What a fall furnace tune-up includes

Based on ENERGY STAR's checklist, a heating tune-up should cover:

  • Gas connections, gas pressure, burner combustion and the heat exchanger
  • Safety and system controls, to confirm safe operation
  • Electrical connections tightened, with voltage and current measured on motors
  • Moving parts lubricated where needed
  • The condensate drain (high-efficiency furnaces make water)
  • Thermostat settings
  • The air filter

What a spring AC tune-up includes

  • Indoor (evaporator) and outdoor (condenser) coils cleaned
  • Refrigerant level checked and adjusted if needed, by an EPA Section 608-certified technician
  • Blower components cleaned and adjusted for proper airflow
  • Condensate drain checked so it doesn't back up and leak
  • Electrical connections tightened and motor voltage and current measured
  • Controls tested

Heat pumps both heat and cool, so they benefit from both visits.

What you can do between visits

  • Check the filter monthly. See how often to change your furnace filter.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, grass clippings, plants and snow.
  • Keep supply registers and return grilles open and unblocked.
  • Replace thermostat batteries yearly if yours uses them.
  • Glance at the condensate drain line and pump for leaks or standing water.

Leave burner compartments, refrigerant and electrical parts to a technician.

Is a maintenance plan worth it?

If you'd otherwise forget, a plan takes care of the scheduling. Our maintenance plan includes a spring AC tune-up and a fall furnace tune-up, priority scheduling and a member discount on repairs. When comparing any plan, look at what gets checked at each visit, not just the price.

When to call a pro

Book heating maintenance in early fall and cooling maintenance in spring, before the first cold snap or heat wave. Call sooner if you notice new noises, short cycling, a burning smell that doesn't fade after the first run of the season, or rooms that won't reach the set temperature. If you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house first. Then call 911 or Nicor Gas at 888-642-6748 from outside.

More questions

How often should I get my HVAC tuned up?

Once a year for each system: the furnace in fall and the AC in spring. Heat pumps run year-round, so they benefit from both visits.

Does skipping a tune-up void my warranty?

It depends on the manufacturer and the warranty. Carrier requires maintenance that follows the owner's manual, and Lennox's pre-2022 basic warranty says failure to maintain voids it. Keep dated service records either way.

Can I do a tune-up myself?

You can change the filter, clear the outdoor unit and keep vents open. Gas pressure, combustion, refrigerant and electrical checks need a trained technician and the right tools.

Does a brand-new system need a tune-up?

Yes. New equipment still needs yearly maintenance, and you usually have 60 to 90 days to register it for the longest warranty, depending on the brand.
